A natural, calcium-rich live food your frogs, toads, newts and salamanders will respond to. Here's everything you need to know about feeding Calciworms.
WHY DO AMPHIBIANS RESPOND TO CALCIWORMS?
Frogs, toads, newts and salamanders are natural insect hunters that respond strongly to movement. Calciworms are soft-bodied, naturally high in calcium and available in different sizes, making them a useful addition to a varied feeder insect routine.
Most amphibians swallow prey whole, so size really matters. As a simple rule, choose Calciworms smaller than the width of your amphibian's head:
Young frogs, small newts, smaller salamanders
Most adult frogs and toads
Always confirm suitability for your species
Calciworms are not a complete diet and should be offered as part of a varied feeding routine alongside other suitable feeder insects.
A shallow feeding dish is often the easiest way to offer Calciworms. It keeps the larvae contained and makes it easier for your amphibian to spot them, especially in terrariums with loose substrate, moss or leaf litter.
Some amphibians will take Calciworms from soft-ended feeding tongs, which helps with controlled feeding. Be gentle and never force food.
- Keep Live Calciworms in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight
- Follow the storage instructions on the pack
- Use them while fresh
- Avoid exposing them to excessive heat or moisture before feeding
- Remove uneaten food promptly, especially in warm, damp enclosures
Start with a small number of appropriately sized Live Calciworms. Offer them when your amphibian is normally active, and use a shallow dish so the movement is clearly visible.
Top tip
If your amphibian is unsure at first, try feeding in low light for nocturnal species, offering alongside a familiar feeder insect, or trying smaller larvae. Some take to new food immediately; others need repeated exposure before showing interest.
Live or Dried CalciWorms?
Live Calciworms
The best option for most amphibians. Their movement helps trigger a natural feeding response, and their soft bodies make them easy to swallow whole — useful for sight hunters, movement-responsive species, and encouraging natural hunting behaviour.
Dried Calciworms
Usually less suitable for amphibians, since many prefer moving prey and may ignore dried insects. If used, offer carefully and only to animals already known to accept non-moving food.
