WHICH FISH CAN EAT CALCIWORMS?
Many aquarium and pond fish naturally eat insects, larvae and other small invertebrates — including koi, goldfish, cichlids, betta, gouramis, barbs and other insect-eating species. Calciworms add natural protein and variety alongside a suitable complete fish food, not as a replacement for it.
Choose the right size and form for your setup:
Small Live Calciworms or crumbled dried larvae
Small Live Calciworms work best
Dried Calciworms float well for koi & goldfish
Feed only what fish will eat quickly to protect water quality, and remove anything uneaten — especially in aquariums.
In aquariums, feed very small amounts and watch how quickly fish respond, removing anything left behind to protect water quality. In ponds, Dried Calciworms float well, making them easy for fish to spot and for you to monitor and clear.
Dried Calciworms are especially useful for hand-feeding tame pond fish, and for supporting koi and goldfish condition through autumn and winter.
- Crush or crumble dried larvae for smaller fish where needed
- Use Small Live Calciworms for active aquarium feeders and surface or mid-water feeders
- Use Dried Calciworms for koi, goldfish and mixed pond fish
- Introduce slowly — some fish take time to recognise a new food
- Always use as part of a varied diet, not the only food
Start with a small amount and watch how your fish respond. Some fish recognise Calciworms straight away, while others — especially those reluctant to try new or dried foods — take a little longer.
Top tip
Calciworms naturally contain lauric acid, one of the reasons insect larvae are valued in aquaculture feed, and insect protein has been linked with improved parasite resilience in some fish feeding studies.
Live or Dried CalciWorms?
Live Calciworms
Best when you want movement and a strong feeding response — ideal for aquarium fish that take live food, smaller fish (if appropriately sized), and fish reluctant to try dried foods. Make sure Live Calciworms are small enough to swallow easily.
Dried Calciworms
Best for convenience and floating feed — ideal for koi, goldfish, larger pond fish and hand-feeding. Easy to store, and can be crushed or crumbled for smaller aquarium fish as an occasional treat.
