HEDGEHOGS

Feeding Guide

A natural, nutritious treat your garden hedgehogs will love. Here's everything you need to know about feeding Calciworms.

WHY DO HEDGEHOGS NEED INSECTS?

Hedgehogs are natural night-time foragers, searching grass, borders and leaf litter for beetles, caterpillars and other invertebrates. Calciworms give them that natural insect taste, without the poor calcium-to-phosphorus balance of dried mealworms.

How much should I feed?

Start with a small handful in the evening, and adjust based on how much is eaten overnight:

Evening

A small handful is a good starting point each evening

Morning

All gone by morning? Offer a little more next time

Leftovers

Food left over? Reduce the amount you put out

The aim is to supplement natural foraging, not replace it completely.

How often should I feed them?

Feed at dusk or early evening, when hedgehogs are starting to forage. Always provide fresh water alongside food, especially with Dried Calciworms.

Autumn matters most — hedgehogs need to build condition before hibernation, so regular evening feeding is especially useful at this time of year.

How should I store them?

  • Live Calciworms: keep cool, dry and out of direct sunlight, and use while fresh
  • Dried Calciworms: store in a sealed container or resealable bag
  • Keep Dried Calciworms cool, dry and away from direct sunlight
  • Avoid moisture getting into the pack, as damp food can spoil
  • Soak Dried Calciworms before feeding to soften and add moisture

What's the best way to introduce them?

Start with a small amount in a place hedgehogs already visit. Use a shallow, heavy dish or a hedgehog feeding station, placed somewhere quiet and sheltered near a hedge or fence line.

Top tip

If they don't eat them straight away, try mixing a few Calciworms with a familiar hedgehog food. Hedgehogs rely heavily on smell, so once they find a reliable source they tend to return night after night.

Why choose Calciworms over mealworms?

Naturally high in calcium, unlike low-calcium dried mealworms

Avoids the poor calcium-to-phosphorus balance found in mealworms

Movement of Live Calciworms encourages natural foraging behaviour

A safer regular treat than mealworms, milk, bread or salted foods
