WILD BIRDS

Feeding Guide

A natural, nutritious treat your garden birds will love. Here's everything you need to know about feeding Calciworms.

WHY DO WILD BIRDS NEED INSECTS?

Wild birds naturally eat insects, grubs and other small invertebrates. Calciworms are a natural insect food, rich in protein and naturally high in calcium, especially important during nesting, chick rearing, moulting and colder weather.

How much should I feed?

Feed small amounts that birds will clear quickly. As a simple guide:

Small garden

One small handful per day

Busy garden

2–3 handfuls, split into separate feeds

Nesting season

Smaller amounts, offered more often

In warm weather, remove uneaten food quickly. Garden feeding should support natural foraging, not replace it completely.

How often should I feed them?

You can feed Calciworms daily during key times of year. Little and often is better than putting out large amounts that sit uneaten.

Spring: Daily, especially when nesting.
Summer: Daily, with extra attention to hygiene.
Autumn: Several times a week to help birds build condition.
Winter: Daily during cold weather.

Live or dried — what's the difference?

  • Live Calciworms suit parent birds feeding chicks, fledglings learning to feed, and spring/summer feeding
  • Dried Calciworms suit autumn and winter feeding, and adult birds building condition
  • Soak dried Calciworms before feeding in warm weather, nesting season or fledgling season
  • Use a shallow dish for live Calciworms to keep them contained
  • Offer on a clean bird table, hanging feeder, or scattered on clean ground

How do I introduce calciworms?

Start with a small amount in a place birds already visit. It can take birds a little while to recognise something new as food, especially Dried Calciworms since they don't wiggle around.

Top tip

Once birds recognise Calciworms as food, they usually keep coming back. Give them time to discover them.
